This engaging read is plot-driven and action-packed, but the many unexpected twists and turns sometimes leave readers with more questions than answers. But instead of safety and answers, they are faced with possible betrayal. Not knowing whom to trust, they try to find answers by going home. The teens piece together what little information they have and now realize that they all possess supernatural powers. When the helicopter crashes, they narrowly escape and find themselves alone in the Vancouver wilderness being pursued by their kidnappers. In flight, they realize that they are being kidnapped and take action. Maya Delaney and her friends are rescued by helicopter while escaping from a suspicious forest fire. The Calling picks up where The Gathering (HarperCollins, 2011) leaves off.

In fact, there was a troubling air of misogyny about the book since the most gruesome acts are perpetrated against women.īilly, the other main character, although a conman and fraudster on the run, comes across as a positive saint in comparison. I found some of his acts of violence, including sexual violence, disturbing (although I will admit to being squeamish). The Nomad is a cold, amoral, sadistic psychopath. In the person of the killer, referred to throughout by the soubriquet ‘The Nomad’, the author has created a memorable character (if not in a good way for those prone to nightmares). In fact, one of the things I enjoyed was the detail about the customs and culture of Thailand, Malaysia and Borneo. This is a well-constructed thriller which features some exotic locations. And even though Zayne is a Warden, part of the race of gargoyles tasked with keeping humanity safe, Layla's kiss will kill anything with a soul-including him.
